Xbox Group Spotlight: DTH
Spotlight on a Geezerlady writes "Operation: Delta Burke
Mission: Lose 30 pounds by the release date of CoD Modern Warfare II.
Mission success: Pleased wife will allow extra hours to play this most awesome of games.
Mission Failure: Pick-up of CoD Modern Warfare from
Best Buy will be delayed until mission is accomplished. There is no room for failure.
This is Duty, Team, and Honor. This is DTH Geezers.

DTH Geezers is one of our more unique groups that have formed under the Geezer Gamer banner. They call themselves a Unit of Geezer gamers, consisting of individuals, some belonging to other clans/groups, but all have come together for the love of one game and one game only, Call of Duty. They are lead by what they call The Joint Chiefs, consisting of six Geezer gamers by the names of Flu, GrnMntDragon, TrueAnimosity, MidnighGhostGF,BigAppleBag, and Studio213 - and 5 executive officers - Sully, FireHawkster, JBenn, Kirk_Blanchard, and GOPDevil.
For DTH the love of this game runs deep - so much so that they will subject their gamer bodies to diet and exercise. Losing weight is hard enough for nerds, I should know – my Dance Dance Revolution dance pad sits in a corner collecting dust mocking me as I type. But to fast from food for your favorite game of all time is borderline religious! And it deserves my respect. The ability to grasp any sort of skill in the Call of Duty franchise coupled with the determination to lose 30 pounds has eluded me for 2 years now. So, Hooah, DTH, the spotlight is now on you!
How did you guys get started?

Flu: I'm sure Dragon can expound much more on this than I can.
First, there was Call of Duty 4, which was one of the most awesome games ever.
Then, there was the GGSE COD4 tournament, which was a lot of fun, but the LMB team (my team) was the first team eliminated.
Thirsty for more, and not having a lot of COD4 interest in LMB, I came up with the idea of a COD4 league with teams scrambled up regardless of any group affiliations. The league was a huge success and we all made some new friends.
Shortly after the league, Dragon approached me with the idea of a COD4-focused group. I believe that the Cirques also had limited interest in COD4, preferring Halo.
I had never quite gotten the "clan" concept here at GG, but I dug the game-related groups I'd been part of. There was Golf-Zulu-Romeo which was a Battlefield 2 group, and then there was a Rainbow Six: Lockdown in-game clan led by a certain lady. I thought the idea of a COD4 group was a good one. I didn't want all the great people I'd met in the league to go back to their clan homes and never play COD4 with me again.
Dragon reached out to the other team captains from the league with the exception of Reecer, due to not really knowing him. Sniper and Raptor declined to participate, but Warin, True, and Silent joined Dragon and I as the original Joint Chiefs of DTH. We spent about a month hashing out what we wanted the group to be, and brought in a few standout participants from the league as our "officers." We talked about everything for so long, that I think we were actually surprised that there was still interest when we announced DTH in April of 2008.

GrnMtnDrgn: Ahhh, memories.
Flu's got everything spot on, with the exception that I think I did reach out to Reecer, he just never responded ... or if he did, it was a very brief "not interested". I may have that wrong (I'm much older than Flu and way more forgetful) but it was fine because the JCs we did have were all very excited about the idea.
As for my motivation, I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the camaraderie that grew out of Flu's CoD4 League. At the time, I don't think he knew how much we all appreciated the work that he put in to make it happen. Actually, I'm not sure he does to this day, but suffice to say that he deserves and has the respect and thanks of every DTH Joint Chief, Executive Officer (XO) and Grunt (what we call members) who is on our active roster, even those who weren't Geezers at the time. Shortly after I joined GG, I met F1at1ined, became a good friend of his, and joined the Cirques. Over the next few months, I also became friendly with Overlord Kit and a few others. Even though the Cirques were making an effort to embrace CoD4, the number of my clan mates who played the game was very limited. I had tried very hard to get excited about Halo 3 but the game just kept eluding me and I found myself connecting with fewer and fewer Cirques outside of our forum.
After the League, I spoke privately with Kit and F1at about whether or not it would be OK for me to start a new GG group that was devoted just to Call of Duty games. I didn't want to leave the Cirques because I really enjoyed their forum, but I never got to game with them because I didn't like Halo. They were 100% supportive, and Kit even went so far as to offer me a staff position within the Cirques as CoD4 staffer. While I appreciated her offer, I felt that there just weren't enough Cirques to make it work, so I approached Flu and the other League Captains.
As Flu mentioned, we identified several of the best players from the League and wanted them to be officers. With the notable exception of True, who I'm convinced is part animal when he has a controller in his hands; Warin, Silent, Flu and I were average CoD4 players. So we felt that we needed some ringers to be our executive officers. Two of those original XOs are now Joint Chiefs ... Midnight Ghost and Studio.

True Animosity: That pretty much sums it up. I remember those days of Flu, Dragon and I figuring out the way to approach forming DTH. It has really been exciting seeing DTH become what it has. Even though I had to take a short leave of absence due to going back to college, as I came back I have seen an elite squad form for Call of Duty and some great friendships.

Who are some "characters" and what makes them "special"?

FLU: I almost think it's an unwritten rule that you have to be a "character" to get in. The first names that come to mind are Krazy, Miller, Shag, True, Daddio, Apple, Sully, Devil, Studio....I could keep going. You know how when a bunch of guys get together, it's almost as if it's a competition to see who can come up with the best insult or burn? That's pretty much our whole existence.
GrnMntDragon: Whoo boy, where to begin. And in some cases, the word "special" might mean something VERY different.
As Flu alluded, it's almost easier to count the non-characters / cutups in DTH than it is to list them all. To say that there are several cases of "very dry senses of humor" is an understatement.
I also want to give a special shout out to our sole female member Redrum. We never intended for DTH to be a guys club, but it ended up that way until Red came along earlier this year. I was privileged to be in several of the first games she played with Geezers long before she became a Grunt. Not only did she step right in and kick everyone's asses on the virtual battlefield, she also stood up to the language and occasionally raunchy but good-natured humor (insults or burns as Flu said) that often takes place.
Over time, especially in the forums, she's learned to give insults and burns as good as she gets too!
BigAppleBag: Flu brings up some good names, but Krazy would get my vote. Super friendly, terrible jokes and horrendous aim. But we love him for it.
Sully: Oh man, Krazy is a star.
GOPDevil: Krazy is our perfect combo of Susan Boyle and Bobcat Goldthwaite. Add in a pinch of team kill and I think you have the DTH mascot.

Do you have any special events planned?

GrnMntDragon: Yeah, we're closing down our Recruitment Office from October 1 to after the first of the year so we can all play MW2 without having to bother with any administrative tasks. Seriously, we won't be accepting new members from October 1 to after January 1.
I imagine that somewhere down the road, DTH will run a MW2 League for all Geezers. Depending on how the new game offers private room options, I also foresee some kind of MW2 Custom Game Night w/ DTH in our future. Likely anything we do will be open to the whole Geezer community.
STUDIO213: We have our first ever DTH Meet&Greet planned for February/March of 2010.
Also, twice a year, DTH asks for donations from its members for the Geezer Site. It just our way of giving back to the community that made gaming so much fun and brought us all together.
GOPDevil: I am fairly certain everything we have ever done, be it the most recent and ongoing tournament, or the 3 v 3 we had a few months back, was open to the GG.com community as a whole. I love that! New people get exposed to the members of DTH, and DTH gets to meet new people. Several of our current members have enjoyed (or tolerated) our humor and banter enough to join up.

What do you like about the G.G.com community?

Flu: It's great to be among other mature gamers. We've all experienced the cesspool that is Xbox Live, and it's nice to find a place where acting like an adult is valued over creative use of profanity and slurs. And when you're among other adults who are into video games, you're pretty sure that you've got people with similar mindsets and opinions, which makes it great to discuss things not even related to video games, such as parenting, movies, books, sports and anything else you might think of.
Geezer Gamers is something different to each person, I think. We are able to each make of it what we want it to be and use it as we desire.
Big AppleBag: I highly value my creative use of profanity. You should too.
Kirk_Blanchard: I value creative use of profanity. It's the pedestrian use of profanity that offends me.
Sully: Acceptance.
GG is an American gaming site, and I was welcomed from the start. Now that’s a big deal in my book.
BigAppleBag: We just like your accent. It makes you sound smart.
MidNightGhostGF: Well, I'll be cliché and say it's by far the people. That may be the easy answer but it's the answer in my opinion. I passed through a couple of other mature gamer sites before GG but this one was the only one that felt like a home.
GrnMntDragon: Cliché or not, it's the truth. I was pretty late to the online gaming party, not joining XBL until the Halo 3 and CoD4 beta were imminent. From the very first post in the "Hello, my name is ..." thread, this site quite literally changed my life. Within a few months, I couldn't remember what it was like to NOT check the forums multiple times every day and to look forward to gaming with my friends almost every night. Thankfully, I have a wife who understands my addiction to Geezer Gamers, even though she cares little for video games.
Flu: Yeah, I came here not knowing what to expect and ready to be ignored as "some new guy." Very shortly after I signed up, there was a Ghost Recon 2 sniper tournament. I was paired up with a very helpful and understanding partner by the name of nain. Great experience, and solidified me as a Geezer for a long time to come.

Any suggestions to improve the GG.com community?

Flu: Dstructions will roll his eyes when he sees this, but I'd love to see a major site overhaul with additional functionality.
MidnightGhostGF: Maybe more of a reason to go to the front page of the site. Given the number of folks on the site I bet we could drum up enough contributors to keep a steady flow of news as well as other content flowing on the front page, perhaps even something where the various groups around GG sort little "what's happening in their group" sort of posts on a regular basis.
I know there's content there, I'm just thinking about making the home page more of a destination both for current members and for drawing in new members.
Maybe a section that shows a live GG Twitter account feed. GG members could do @replies to the account when they see something like an article that other GG folks might be interested in reading.

How does someone join DTH?

Sully:
As recruitment officer I suppose I should answer this one. Joining is simple, all we require is that you play Call of Duty, you are a member of GG, you post a few throughout the GG community and that you game with us every now and again. A new recruit will require two sponsors before their evaluation can start and it would be down to those sponsors to get the new recruit into games with other DTH members. After some weeks the new recruit would be granted grunt status and be allowed to use the DTH Sig and DTH clan tag.

Any warnings for potential clan members?

Flu: Remain active on the site or you'll be removed from the active roster. Simply playing on Live isn't enough to be part of this unit.
MidnightGhostGF: KrazyKop will teamkill you at some point, it may be an accident or maybe not.
To expand on Flu's comment, we feel like GG and by extension DTH are more than just some people getting together to play video games. At the core it's about relationships, one the of the things we expect from a member is that they contribute to not only our forums but GG as a whole. That said it's not like we're tracking statistics; we just do what we can to encourage folks to participate in the forums as much as possible within reason.
BigAppleBag: You probably want to have thick skin if you're gonna play with us. No one is off limits for a little ball busting. You may get by for awhile without being razzed, but it's coming. I will make it happen.

Thanks DTH, for your time and for introducing us to your group. Be prepared for some new members because your group sounds like a blast for those who love the CoD franchise. Keep up the good work, happy gaming and I will see you guys online!"

Nice introduction article. I was wondering how you guys/gals got together, and this was a good way to learn a little about your group. Wished I played COD4 more, but maybe MW2.
